I was too pessimistic in my last post about the U.S. men. They still have a good chance to prove me right and contend for a medal. Nakamura fought hard to save an inferior position (he probably missed a win earlier) and then, admirably if perhaps recklessly, pressed for a win.
Anyway, the U.S. and the Czech Republic tied 2-2. As reported earlier France upset Russia and leader Armenia defeated the Ukraine, both by 2.5-1.5 scores. And China jumped back into contention with a 4-0 nuclear annihilation of Georgia. The standings as I have calculated them:
Armenia 26.5
China 25.5
France 24 [how could I have missed that last night?]
Russia 23.5
Ukraine 23.5
U.S.A. 23.5
Cuba 23
Czech Rep. 23
Slovenia 23
India 22.5
Uzbekistan 22.5
The women’s tournament was full of 2.5-0.5 results, notably the U.S. losing to Ukraine, who now take the lead. The U.S.A. will need to win a few lopsided matches in order to contend now:
Ukraine 21
Russia 20.5
Georgia 19
China 18.5
Bulgaria 18.5
Armenia 18
U.S.A. 17.5
Romania 17.5
France 17.5
