Armenia gains a point on second-place China by beating them 2.5-1.5 but Russia gains a half-point on Armenia with a 3-1 victory over the Ukraine. France and the U.S.A. draw 2-2. Kamsky lost to Bacrot, Onischuk drew Lautier, Nakamura saved a draw from a lost position against Fressinet, and Ibragimov beat Bauer.
My unofficial calculation of the standings:
Armenia 29
China 27
Russia 26.5
Czech Rep. 26.5
France 26
U.S.A. 25.5
Cuba 25
Uzbekistan 25
India 24.5
Ukraine 24.5
Israel 24.5
Azerbaijan 24.5
Hungary 24.5
Romania 24.5
Georgia 24.5
Armenia has already played China and Russia and therefore must play the Czech Republic. China has already played Russia and therefore has to play France. That leaves (unless I am mistaken) Russia facing the U.S.A. While an upset win isn’t absolutely necessary to keep U.S. medal hopes alive, it would sure help.
On the women’s side, U.S. hopes faded a bit further when they could manage no better than a 1.5-1.5 tie against France. The Ukraine and Russia both scored 2-1 victories and will probably contend with each other for the gold and silver. A bunch of teams are in the running for the bronze. The standings as I have calculated them:
Ukraine 23
Russia 22.5
China 20.5
Georgia 20
India 19.5
Bulgaria 19.5
Greece 19.5
U.S.A. 19
Armenia 19
Romania 19
France 19
Slovenia 19
Finally, tomorrow is an off-day. I will be onsite at some point and may or may not file an update depending on whether anything seems to be happening.
