Yesterday’s leapfroggers get served as frog’s legs to the leaders today. Cuba’s 3.5-0.5 win over Indonesia earned them a match with Armenia while the Czech Republic, 3-1 victors over Israel, faces Russia. Board two of Cuba-Armenia is the closest contest with Cuba’s Dominguez only being 59 points lower than Akopian. Most of the other games [...]

Whoso list to hunt
by Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542)
Whoso list to hunt? I know where is an hind!
But as for me, alas! I may no more,
The vain travail hath wearied me so sore;
I am of them that furthest come behind.
Yet may I by no means my wearied mind
Draw from the deer; but as she fleeth afore
Fainting I [...]

I’m calling it a night in the interest of a reasonably timed dinner and bed before midnight (I’m staying some distance from the site). I took no pictures today because the batteries in my camera were dead. They have been recharged and I hope to have lots more to post tomorrow.

The Ukraine and Russia lurched forward. The Netherlands and Belarus slipped back. The U.S. stood still and lots of teams leapfrogged with lopsided victories. As I see it the standings are now:
Armenia 21
Russia 20
Cuba 19.5
Ukraine 19
Georgia 19
Czech Rep. 19
Uzbekistan 19
France 18.5
U.S.A. 18.5
Netherlands 18.5
Germany 18.5
Denmark 18.5
Sweden 18.5
India 18
China 18
Bulgaria 18
Belarus 18
Philippines 18
On the women’s side, Russia [...]

The U.S. rested its top two boards and what did it get them? A drawn match. Ibragimov came unraveled in the time scramble and lost.

Russia is up 1-0 against Slovakia while the Ukraine has beaten Romania, 2.5-0.5 and the U.S.A. has beaten India by the same score.

Armenia has defeated the Netherlands 3-1. Russia leads Belarus 3-0. So Russia can gain no more than 1 point and will likely lose a point. Bareev is down a pawn to Dydyshko in the remaining game (actually down 1.66 according to Fritz). So much for my predictions.
The Ukraine has defeated India behind Sergey Karjakin’s win [...]

One important thing to keep in mind is that it is a secret ballot. There is therefore no way of knowing if a delegate has obeyed his federation’s instructions (or followed through on his corrupt agreement). Remember the old definition of an honest politician: one who, once bought, stays bought.

The server has not updated the games in at least a half hour but I can say that Irina Krush has won for the U.S. women.
Board two of the Netherlands-Armenia match on the men’s side was drawn. Vladimir Akopian of the U.S.A. has drawn against Pontus Carlsson of Sweden.
More when I have it.

There are 6 of them (2008 will be in Dresden):
Poznan, Poland
Khanty-Mansiysk (where the last FIDE lottery tournament was held in the middle of nowhere, Russia)
Riga, Latvia
Tallinn, Estonia (the one I’m rooting for since a friend of mine has apartment there where I can stay)
Budva, Serbia & Montenegro (well, just Montenegro now; I don’t how or [...]
