It’ll be interesting to see if this reduces the amount of begging for federal money that states do. I suspect that a chunk of this debate is a stalking horse over a fight to get the feds to cover the unfunded pension commitments of the states. That fight is a vicious one where partisan interests are perfectly aligned with ideological tastes.
